Tutorial 6
- Zigzag Generator: Add questionnaires to test (step 2)
- It
is possible to create a series of multiple-choice or true-false
questions as a questionnaire to be added at any location in
the text to be read.
Adding a questionnaire is a two-step process. First, you must
create a question bank. Second, these questions
(or part of these questions) must be linked to
a segment of the text, which is often the last segment of
the text. Though questions can be created either at step 1 or
step 2 of text generation, they can only be attached to the
text at step 2. It is also possible to create two or more questionnaires
and link them to different locations in the text (for example,
at the end of a thematic unit of the text). However, each question
in the Question Bank can be used only once within the same Zigzag
project.
Create
a Question Bank
- Open the
File > Open Zigzag Project
menu in the Zigzag
Generator application.
- A window
called Open Project will appear. Select the project Go
play somewhere else 6a and click OK.

- Select
the Tools > Question Bank menu (or click on the
button on the toolbar). A window called Question Bank will
open. Click on the Add tab in the top left-hand corner
of the Question Bank window, which will make the first
No Title item appear.
- In the
Title field, replace No Title by Mrs. Brown-text.
- As concerns
the Type of question, click on True or False.
Two new buttons, which correspond to the options True
and False, will be displayed. Accept the default value
posted (i.e. True).
- In the
Question field, replace <Write question here>
by Mrs. Brown didn't want us to play ball behind her house.
Here is what you should obtain:
- Click on
the Add tab once more. This command saves the first question
written with the title Mrs. Brown-text and brings up
a new item to be filled in.
- Replace
No title by Adults-text.
- In the
Question field, replace <Write question here>
by Who said : «Go play somewhere else!»?
- As concerns
the Type of question, click on the Multiple Choice
button.
- Four additional
fields will be displayed. Write the following:
- Field
1: Mr. Brown
- Field
2: Mrs. Lemelin
- Field
3: Mr. Meyer
- Field
4: Mrs. Meyer
- Check the
button corresponding to field 3 (i.e. the correct answer). Here
is the result:
- Click Close
in the Question Bank window.
- Select
the File > Save Zigzag Project menu and then the File
> Close Zigzag Project menu.
- Please
note that it is possible to modify or delete pre-existing questions
as long as they have not already been used in a questionnaire
(see Modify or delete a question).
Attach questions to text in questionnaire
format
- Select
the File > Open Zigzag Project menu. A window called
Open Project will appear. Select the project Go play
somewhere else 6b and click OK. This project contains
a bank of twelve already formulated questions.
- In vertical
view, select the last segment of the text (the segment will
change to be blue in color); cf. Note 1.
- Next, use
one of the following three options:
- Select
the menu Events > Questionnaire.
- Using
the mouse's contextual menu (right click), select the item
Questionnaire.

- Click
on the
button on the toolbar (be careful not to confuse it with
the
button referring to the Question Bank).
- A window
called Assign Questions to a Questionnaire will appear.
On the left-hand side, the window displays the questions already
created.
- Select
the question Mr. Meyer-image and click on the right-pointing
arrow (or double-click on the item itself). The question will
be transferred to the right-hand side column called Questionnaire
Assigned to Segment.
- Proceed
in the same manner for the following questions:
- Mr.
Meyer-text
(true or false)
- Adults
- text (multiple choice)
- Us-image
(multiple choice)
- Us-text
(multiple choice)
- Us-text2
(multiple choice).
-
On the
right-hand side of the window, the upward and downward pointing
arrows allow you to rearrange the order of presentation of
the questions. To use this function, select the question of
your choice and click as often as required on one of the two
arrows.
-
Click
Close. You have just created a questionnaire with six
questions, which is attached to the last segment of the text.
-
To preview
how the questionnaire will look in Zigzag Test, use
the Integrated Test module of the Zigzag Generator
(the Tools > Integrated Test menu or the
button on the toolbar). Answer No to the question asked
in the Random Distribution of Targets window. To exit
the simulation mode of the test, reselect the Tools >
Integrated Test menu or the
button on the toolbar.
-
Proceed
as described above to add three more questionnaires to the
text:
- Add
a two-question questionnaire (i.e. Mrs. Brown-image,
Mrs. Brown-text) to the fifth segment of the text
(i.e. were playing ball behind her house.); cf. Note
2.
- Add
a two question questionnaire (i.e. The older kids-image,
The older kids-text) to the eleventh segment (i.e.
us to go play somewhere else.).
- Add
a two-question questionnaire (i.e. Mr. Lemelin-image,
Mr. Lemelin-text) to the twenty-first segment (i.e.
tell us: «Go play somewhere else!»).
- Once all
the questions have been assigned to a questionnaire, the Question
Bank field should be empty. Click Close.
- Save the
changes (File > Save Zigzag Project) before using
the Integrated Test module. Then, close the project (File
> Close Zigzag Project).
Modify or delete a question
- In the
Go play somewhere else 6c project, the questions have
been added to the questionnaire following the instructions in
the previous section. Use this project to learn how to modify
or delete questions or questionnaires. Modifying or deleting
pre-existing questions is done in the Question Bank window.
This window is accessible via the Tools > Question Bank
menu (or the
button on the toolbar):
- To
modify the title of a question, the question itself, or
any element referring to the answer to the question, make
the changes to the appropriate field and confirm your choice
by clicking Close.
- To
delete a question, select its title on the left-hand side
of the Question Bank window and click Delete.
- It
is not possible to modify or delete a question that has
already been assigned to a questionnaire. A message that
you must obey will appear in the Correction field
of the Question Bank before you are able to make
the desired changes.

Modify or delete a questionnaire
- Modifying
or deleting a questionnaire is done through the Assign Questions
to a Questionnaire window. To access this window, in the
vertical view, select the textual segment to which the questionnaire
is attached. The selected segment will change to be blue in
color.
- Next, proceed
in one of the following three ways:
- Select
the Events > Questionnaire menu.
- Using
the mouse's contextual menu (right click), select the option
Modify / Delete Questionnaire.
- Click
the
button on the toolbar.
- A window
Assign Questions to Questionnaire will appear. Select
the question to be deleted from the right-hand field called
Questionnaire assigned to a segment and click on the
arrow pointing to the left field (or double-click on the question).
- The selected
question will then appear in the Question Bank field.
The question can now be associated to another questionnaire,
if so desired.
- To completely
delete a questionnaire, transfer all the questions to the left-hand
field. When you remove the last question, you will be asked
the following question:
- Answer
Yes if the paragraph was only conceived in order to present
the questionnaire. The corresponding symbols will disappear:
- Click Close.
- Select
File > Save Zigzag Project and File > Close
Zigzag Project.
Note
1.
The
questionnaire is not accessible in the multi-selection mode,
that is to say, when many textual segments have been selected
using the mouse and Ctrl key simultaneously. In multi-selection
mode, textual segments will be displayed in red.
Note
2.
A
questionnaire is always attached to the last segment
of a paragraph, or more specifically, the whole text. When a
questionnaire is added to a textual segment, the paragraph symbol
is automatically added beside the symbol for the questionnaire:
