Tutorial 1- Zigzag Test:
Take a test
- This tutorial will show you how to use Zigzag
Test to take a test that has already been generated.
- Open the Zigzag Test application in one
of the following two ways:
- By selecting the application from the program
menu bar:

- By double-clicking on the shortcut icon
(which under standard installation conditions, should be
located on the desktop).
- In the application's menu, select the menu Test
> Take a test.

- A window called Identification will appear.
Write your name or a code of your choice (letters and numbers
only); cf. Note. Then, click
on OK.

- Depending on the choices made in Zigzag Generator,
a varying number of tests will be displayed. When no choice has been previously made in Zigzag
Generator, the following message will appear:

- However,
in the present context, many tests are displayed. Slide your
mouse over the names of the tests appearing in bold-type (a
red arrow will appear next to the corresponding item).
- Select the test called Go play somewhere else.
Then follow the instructions.
- Use the mouse to click on the box containing the
segment «Go play somewhere else! You're (i.e.
the second box of the first column of the matrix).
- The selected segment will be displayed in the top
left-hand corner. Also, the segments in the first column of
the matrix have been replaced by those which were previously
located in the second column.
- Still in the first column, click on the box containing
the segment tell us: «Go play somewhere else!»
(i.e. the wrong choice). Once more, the columns will be
displayed towards the left. At the top, the segment in color
is not the one that you have selected, but rather the one
you should have selected. (i.e. going to dirty my clothes!»).
- Still in the first column, continue the test by
clicking on either the appropriate segment, or on the inappropriate
segment. You will see that, after each click, the columns
roll down towards the left and that an additional segment
is displayed in the top left-hand corner (in black if the
answer is correct, in color if there has been an error).
- At different places in the test, you will have
to answer comprehension questions (either multiple choice
or true-false questions). For the purposes of the tutorial,
answer such that there is at least one error per type of question.
(Please note, however, that Zigzag Test does not give
immediate feedback concerning the correctness of the answer.)
- At the end of the test, you will be able to see
the detailed results by segments, as well as globally either
for the entire text or for coded segments (for example, segments
with vocabulary-comprehension distractors will be coded voc.
If there has been an error on a segment, you will see - displayed
in the second column - the correct answer in black, and the
erronous segment displayed in color. For multiple choice and
true-false questions, only the answer selected by the reader
will be displayed: if it is correct, it will be displayed
in green, if it is incorrect, it will be displayed in red.
- After viewing the test results, click on one of
the two tabs in the following window:

Select another test allows you to repeat the same test
or to choose another one, depending on the parameters defined
in the Build test sequence window of Zigzag Generator
(cf. Note).
- Click on Quit tests. Then, close the Zigzag
Test application by using the Test > Quit menu.
-
Note. It is important that a reader
always identify himself the same way when using the Zigzag
Test application, for two main reasons:
-
Thanks to the menu Tools > Build test sequence
in the Zigzag Generator application, the teacher
can select which tests a given user will have access
to on the classroom computer. Ex.:

The teacher can also stipulate a predetermined order
in which the user must take the selected tests. Also,
the teacher can deny the classroom user the possibility
of taking the same test more than once. Clearly, whether
these constraints are respected depends entirely on
whether the users always identify themselves the same
way.
-
It is possible to display the
results in Zigzag Calculator in many different
ways. When users are allowed to take the same test repeatedly,
the teacher can display the results as a function of
a specific number of trials (two trials, for example).
Identifying the number of test trials for a given user
presupposes that he will always identify himself the
same way.
