Tools > Test Parameters (Context)

  • Select the menu Tools > Test Parameters (or click on the button on the toolbar). The Test Parameters window will appear. Click on Context, if necessary.

Display of the Preceding Context of the Text and the Image

  • Context left, image right button: The text can be accompanied by pictures. The preceding context will be displayed in the top left-hand corner of the Zigzag Test as the reader progresses through the text.

  • Context right, image left button: The text can be accompanied by pictures. The preceding context will be displayed in the top right-hand corner of the Zigzag Test as the reader progresses through the text.

  • All segments visible button: The preceding context will be displayed in the Zigzag Test as the reader progresses through the text, without restrictions (the reader can view the preceding context by using a scroll bar).

  • Limited to ___ segment(s) button: This options allows for a restriction of the number of segments of the preceding context displayed. After clicking on this button, the roll-down menu will let you set the number of segments you would like the reader to have access to from the preceding context (for example, the last ten segments).

  • Image left / centered / right (Without preceding context) button: The text (or list of words) is accompanied by images without the precedent context being displayed. Generally speaking, these options are best suited to the presentation of a list of words coupled with images, where the preceding context is not relevant.

Visual Feedback and Warning Sounds for Errors

  • Box to be checked Identify error in color

This option is only available when the preceding context is displayed. If there is incorrect identification of the textual segment, it will be highlighted with color in the field where the preceding context is displayed. In the example that follows, the reader selects the distractor "So, we went to play":

It is recommended that this box be checked when the option Correct answer obligatory is not checked: the color is then the only feedback available to the reader.

  • Box to be checked Correct answer required

In version 1 of Zigzag Test, the reader had to select the correct answer in order for the text to continue to progress on the screen. When there was an error, the presentation stopped. In the current version, it is possible to progress through the text, segment by segment, independently of whether the chosen segment is correct or not. This is now the default setting in version 2, wheras if one wishes to force a correct answer, the box marked Correct answer required must be checked. When this box is checked, there are two options for visual feedback in the case of an error, either Red X (default) or Emoticon.

  • Box to be checked Error sound alert

When this box is checked, the reader will hear a beep when an error is committed. The option Error sound alert can be checked regardless of the settings for the other options. When both boxes Correct answer obligatory and Error sound alert are checked, the reader will have two sources of feedback; the same applies to the situation where Identify error in color in red and Error sound alert are checked.

    Questionnaire

  • Box to be checked Make context visible when questionnaire is presented

It is possible to display or not display the preceding context at the time that the reader is answering the questionnaire (i.e. multiple choice questions and true or false questions).
